National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day
The Homeless Coalition of Palm Beach County held a candlelight memorial at Currie Park in West Palm Beach at 5:30pm on december 21st to remember the homeless persons who died in 2011 in Palm Beach County. The service was part of the National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day tribute, sponsoted by the National Coalition for the Homeless. Each year, since 1990, the National Coalition has sponsored National Homeless Persons' Memorial Day to bring attention to the crisis of homelessness and to remember our homeless friends who passed on in struggle. Traditionally, ceremonies nationwide are held on December 21st, the first day of winter and the longest night of the year. In many cases, these memorials are the only commemoriation of the life and passing of these 'invisible' persons.
Palm Beach County Commissioner Priscilla Taylor, community leaders, AmeriCorps VISTA staff, along with friends, family, advocates and service providers lit candles in remberance. Homeless/Formerly Homeless speakers read aloud the names of men, women and young adults who died unnoticed in our midst. A bell rang for each name read.
This service was part of the many activities and goals implemented by the Homeless Coalition and the Homeless Advisory Board's Ten Year Plan to End Homelessness.

“Handup” Campaign to End Panhandling in Palm Beach County
The Homeless Advisory Board is working with and supporting the Sheriff’s campaign to end panhandling in Palm Beach County. The Sheriff’s message concerns safety of those panhandling in busy intersections and the fact that money donated on street corners may not make a difference in the life of one person. Lives are not changed on street corners, there is a better way to give.  On TheHomelessPlan.org website is a listing of area providers who provide services to help those in need in our community.  Donations are also accepted on the website as well as texting "IGAVE" to 20222 and will go directly to help those who are almost homeless or experiencing homelessness.
